Illegal dumping degrades water quality
The illegal disposal of waste along highways, in parks, along creeks and rivers is a growing problem in the Central Texas area. Illegally dumped items have been found polluting the Colorado River watershed, including lead acid batteries, appliances, household garbage, building materials, vehicles, old tires, waste drums and chemicals such as paint, oil and antifreeze.
| In January, 2009, Bastrop County partnered with LCRA to develop, install and maintain “no dumping” signs along County roadways. To date, approximately 80 signs have been installed. Since their installation calls to the CAPCOG hotline have increased. |
How you can help!
- Dispose of your litter properly and encourage others to do the same. View a list of licensed landfills and transfer stations in the 10-county CAPCOG region.
- Spread the word to friends and neighbors that illegal dumping is a crime.
- Organize volunteer cleanups of illegal dump sites.
- Write or call your local elected officials to let them know your concerns.
- Report illegal dumping to the CAPCOG Regional Solid Waste Enforcement Task Force. Call toll free at 1-877-NO-DUMPS, or 1-877-663-8677.
