Public Safety Rangers
LCRA Rangers' law-enforcement responsibilities have expanded since the public safety operation was launched in 1980 by a former Texas Ranger.

LCRA Rangers enforce the law on LCRA lands and are responsible for safety on the Highland Lakes and the Colorado River between Austin and Matagorda Bay. LCRA Rangers also work closely with local agencies on a variety of public safety issues.

Founded in 1980 by retired Texas Ranger Captain John Wood, the LCRA Rangers began as gate guards at LCRA's Fayette and Sim Gideon power plants. The Rangers gradually shifted toward more traditional law enforcement. Today, Rangers patrol LCRA lands and waters, provide security for visitors and employees, and assist other agencies during emergencies.
