The threatened piping plover. The beautiful roseate spoonbill. The white-faced ibis. The green kingfisher. These were just a few of the species sought by birders at the 13th Annual Matagorda County Mad Island Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 19.
The count near LCRA's Matagorda Bay Nature Park has led the nation in the largest number of species counted in the past eight years.
Almost 100 bird enthusiasts, including three LCRA employees, joined in the count. Birding enthusiasts will pack up at a moment's notice and travel hundreds of miles to see a highlighted species.
The birds — and the counters — are drawn to Matagorda County because of its diversity of land and wildlife management by locals and landowners.
