Lake LBJ was named for the nation’s 36 th president, Lyndon Johnson, by LCRA in 1965. Before then, the lake was known as Lake Granite Shoals.

Austin and Central Texas communities rely on lakes Travis and Buchanan, the water-supply reservoirs of the Highland Lakes.

Kingsland, at the confluence of the Llano River and Lake LBJ, is a popular recreational and retirement community.

Eagles are a highlight of the Vanishing Texas River Cruise on Lake Buchanan.

Flash Flood Alley” is the Hill Country’s nickname. Don’t be caught by flash flooding – buy and use an all-hazards radio for local broadcasts of NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards.

Rains in March and early April drenched the Hill Country and raised the elevation of Lake Travis by more than 21 feet.

O.H. Ivie Reservoir, located on the Colorado River upstream of Lake Buchanan, was built and is operated by the Colorado River Municipal Water District.

Nude swimming is allowed at Hippie Hollow Park. Located on Lake Travis, it is the only public nude beach in Texas.

Town Lake, which flows through Austin, was impounded by Longhorn Dam in the 1950s. It is not part of the Highland Lakes system.
