Colorado County, just an hour or two from Austin, San Antonio and Houston, offers a host of rural pleasures for families seeking a nearby getaway. There are permanent attractions, such as a 6-mile paddling trail on the Colorado River, and a national wildlife refuge. A special treat is the Colorado County Fair, Sept. 13-16, in the county seat of Columbus. A Japanese television station filmed the fair last year to capture the flavor of a small county fair in rural Texas.
Colorado County Fair
At the crossroads of Texas Highway 71 and U.S. Interstate Highway 10, the four-day fair draws about 15,000 visitors a year. Fair-goers can enjoy features of pastoral life including kids’ livestock shows, a rodeo, country music, creative homemaking, fine arts and a carnival, petting zoo and barbecue cook-off. This year’s entertainment includes country music performers Cory Morrow Friday night and Tracy Lawrence Saturday night.
Canoe and kayak trail
The inland paddling trail begins and ends in Columbus and features two islands, two sets of light rapids and a creek that flows into the river halfway through the 2 ½-hour trip. The put-in and take-out points are at the North River Bridge at Highway 71 and Beason’s Park on Highway 90. A canoe livery at the North River Bridge provides canoe and kayak rentals and shuttle services.
Bird watching
Colorado County is situated on the U.S. Central Flyway, making it possible to see more than 250 species of birds October through November at the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, southeast of Columbus and near Eagle Lake. Visitors may observe and photograph many species of wildlife and plants along the refuge's automobile tour route and two walking trails. Limited picnicking facilities are available.
