AUSTIN -- LCRA will work with experts from three state universities to study the feasibility of the LCRA-SAWS Water Project, which is designed to address the long-term water needs in the Colorado River basin and San Antonio, while exhibiting environmental stewardship.

The LCRA Board of Directors has authorized staff to negotiate interlocal agreements, totaling $4.2 million, with The University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University-San Marcos and Texas A&M University-Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in College Station.

Under the agreements, the three schools will assist LCRA in performing various studies, analyses and research related to the water project over the next six years as follows:

A number of additional contracts are anticipated in the coming months to accomplish the various activities required to fully assess the feasibility of the water project.

The objective of the water project is to satisfy long-term water needs in both the Colorado River basin and the San Antonio area. Lower Colorado River basin users will benefit from the additional water provided for rural communities and improved water levels in Travis and Buchanan lakes. San Antonio benefits by securing an 80-year water supply while protecting the Edwards Aquifer through managed use.
