AUSTIN — KXAN News 36 Chief Meteorologist Jim Spencer is teaming with LCRA, H-E-B Stores and Midland Radio Corporation to bring NOAA all-hazards alert radios to Central Texas. The all-hazards radios provide information on civil emergencies such as Amber alerts, chemical spills, severe weather announcements for tornadoes and flash flooding, and much more.

"Early warning is your best protection," said Bruce Thomas, chief meteorologist and spokesman for Midland Radio.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration all-hazards radios are used by The Department of Homeland Security to broadcast warnings related to national emergencies and other Homeland Security issues.

The all-hazards radio provides several great advantages:

  • Capability to be programmed to the specific county level;
  • Battery back-up;
  • Operates 24/7/365;
  • Serves as an alarm clock;
  • Povides a visual, as well as audio alert system. Additionally, available strobe light attachments provide visual alerts for the hearing impaired.

"It's a great way to keep the community informed and is a valuable resource to inform the public of breaking news about severe weather and other emergencies," said Jim Spencer. "If a disaster strikes, it's best to be prepared."

"This part of the country is called Flash Flood Alley for good reason and that reason alone is why all homes here should have emergency alert radios," said LCRA Board Chair Ray A. Wilkerson, who was appointed by Governor Rick Perry. "These radios can save lives no matter what the emergency."

The NOAA all-hazards alert radios will be available for purchase beginning April 6 at participating H-E-B locations for $29.99. See list of H-E-B stores selling the radios. (Get help downloading PDF documents.) A portion of the proceeds will be donated to local community organizations.
