LCRA Ready for Busy Weekend on Highland Lakes

May 28, 2010 11:30 AM

With hot, sunny weather in the forecast and area lakes nearly full, this Memorial Day weekend on the Highland Lakes promises to be one of the busiest in recent years.

All public boat ramps on the Highland Lakes are open and are expected to be busy beginning Friday afternoon.

LCRA does not ban the use of any type of watercraft on the lakes over which it has jurisdiction: Lakes Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis, Fayette, and Bastrop.

Personal watercraft are banned on Lake Austin over the holiday weekend. The Austin Police Department Parks and Lake Patrol Unit will be enforcing the ban at Lake Austin from sunset Friday, May 28, to sunrise Tuesday, June 1. The city of Austin has jurisdiction over Lake Austin.

Rising lake levels, possible bacteria require caution on area lakes
LCRA urgers boaters and swimmers to use caution on all lakes, particularly after an event such as the heavy rains that occurred over portions of the Llano and San Saba river basins earlier this week. The isolated heavy rains caused an increase of inflows to Lake Buchanan from the San Saba and Colorado rivers, and to Lake LBJ from the Llano River.

While swimming in lakes and streams always carries a risk, LCRA reminds people that higher bacteria levels usually follow heavy rain runoff events. Those higher levels typically return to normal in about a week to 10 days from the time of the peak runoff into the waterways.

Nobody's Waterproof outreach boat offers media rides to Devil’s Hollow
The media is invited to ride on the Nobody's Waterproof boat from Emerald Point Marina on Saturday, May 29. Rides are available between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The Nobody's Waterproof outreach team will be encouraging park and lake visitors to play it safe by giving them prizes if they correctly answer water safety trivia questions. To schedule a ride on the Nobody's Waterproof boat, call Kendra Clawson at (512) 492-5692 or Clara Tuma at (512) 473-3292 by 3 p.m. Friday
