Fuel Tank Removal at Ferguson Power Plant Set to Begin April 26

April 22, 2011 11:00 AM

LCRA and its contractor on April 26 will begin dismantling and removing three above-ground storage tanks at the Thomas C. Ferguson Power Plant near Horseshoe Bay.

The contractor will use hydraulic shears to cut and fold the steel tanks. It also will use jack hammers and other equipment to remove concrete from the tank foundations. Trucks will haul the crushed metal and concrete offsite for recycling. This portion of the project is scheduled to be completed by May 13.

LCRA is working with its contractor to ensure that these operations occur at times during the day that minimize traffic and noise impacts for neighbors. The contractor will work between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. LCRA and the contractor also are taking steps to ensure the operations occur in a safe manner. Trucks will be asked to avoid travel in the area around the plant during school bus and primary commuting hours.

This work is one of the final steps in a project LCRA began earlier this year to remove about 3 million gallons of fuel oil from the Ferguson site. Ferguson no longer uses fuel oil as an alternative to natural gas to produce electricity.

This work is not part of the construction of the new power plant to replace Ferguson. For more information about the Ferguson Replacement Project, visit LCRA's website.
