With the RV Park next door and primitive camping available on the beach, Matagorda Bay Nature Park makes a great destination for many scouting groups. We currently have many scouting activities available to youth and scouting groups. In addition to our other educational and recreational activities, we also have:

  • Saltwater Scouts: Oceanography Merit Badge. This two-hour oceanography program includes exploration of East Matagorda Bay and exploration along the beach. Scouts will learn about the branches of oceanography, properties of salt water and characteristics of ocean waves. They also get a chance to examine the variety of plants and animals that make up Matagorda’s ecosystem. Ask about adding kayaking to the rogram.
  • Scouts Mud Pie: Soil and Water Conservation Merit Badge. This two-hour program includes an exploration East Matagorda Bay, Colorado River and beachside. Scouts will learn about the soil and its properties, erosion and erosion-control, description and characteristics of a watershed, hydrologic cycle, human water use, and water conservation. Ask about adding kayaking to the program.

We can customize scout or youth group programs appropriate to your needs. For more information, contact matagordabay@lcra.org.
