Equestrian Information - A Guide to Riding Your Horse at McKinney Roughs

A challenging and fun trail system has made McKinney Roughs Nature Park popular among horseback riders. No horses are provided, so bring your own.

McKinney Roughs attracts dozens of horseback riders every month.

Features
McKinney Roughs has two equestrian trail heads. See the trail guide for more information. (You need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it.) Several of the trails offer scenic overlooks, cross pine groves and grasslands, as well as access to the Colorado River. Trailhead gates are opened at sunrise and closed at sunset everyday to allow trailriders access to the trails during optimal riding times.

Riding tips
Equestrians must stay on the trails designated for that use. Some trails are for hikers only. Where the trail is narrow, riders should travel single-file. All trails are designed to be used at a slow, reasonable pace.

Trail etiquette
Riders and hikers must share many of the trails. While hikers should always yield to horses, it is important that riders communicate when it is safe for a hiker to pass. Allow hikers to pass horses on the left.
