Matagorda Bay Nature Park: Outdoor Programs
Scout Programs
A great destination for scouting groups

With the RV Park next door and primitive camping available on the beach, Matagorda Bay Nature Park makes a great destination for many scouting groups. We currently have many scouting activities available to youth and scouting groups. In addition to our other educational and recreational activities, we also have the following programs that can be scheduled on a date convenient for your Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop.

 Boy Scout Merit Badge Programs

·         Oceanography: This program includes exploration of the Colorado River and the Matagorda beach. Scouts will learn about the branches of oceanography, properties of salt water and characteristics of ocean waves, and will get a chance to examine the variety of plants and animals that make up Matagorda’s ocean-side ecosystem.
·         Soil and Water Conservation: This program includes an exploration of the mouth of the Colorado River. Scouts will learn about the soil and its properties; erosion and erosion control; the characteristics of a watershed; the hydrologic cycle; human water use and water conservation.

Boy Scouts will explore the wonders of the Gulf, examining water quality and identifying plankton as we dive into the exciting world of oceanography. Soil and water conservation will entail us investigating the unique ecosystem found here at Matagorda Bay Nature Park. Using special charts and soil gauges, Boy Scouts will learn how to better protect and conserve our natural resources.

Matagorda Bay Nature Park offers Cub Scout programming opportunities too.  We can customize programs including kayaking appropriate to your group's needs. For additional information call Matagorda Bay Nature Park at 1-800-776-5272, Ext. 4740 or email  matagordabay@lcra.org.
