POWERHOUSE was brought to Mason Jr. High School by Central Texas Electric Co-op. Laura Parson and Carlos Staudt of CTEC help students with the program.

Students are given an 8-page energy investigation booklet which they take home to perform a home energy audit with the help of their parents. The booklet asked questions about their homes' energy and water use.

Each student receives a 4-page personalized report based on their answers to the energy investigation booklet. The report shows students what areas of their homes are using the most energy and water. The personalized report helps students and their families see how they can help conserve resources by recommending ways to save energy and water.

The report also has tips and savings on how to reduce their energy and water cost. The report also lists patterns of energy and water use, comparisons with the Texas "average" households.

Students take program notes to help with the a review through a "jeopardy-type" game for a quiz that is offered to the teacher.

Students learn that compact fluoresent lighting can help save on their electricity usage.

Students learn that low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators and low-flush toilets can save up to 50% of their household's water usage.

Shading for their homes can reduce electricity usage and help lower their electric bills. Shading can be solar screens, porches, trees and shrubs.

Students get excited about playing POWERHOUSE jeopardy as a review for their quiz.

Thank you CTEC for sponsoring POWERHOUSE for our school. We had fun learning about saving energy and water. Also about learing how save some of our natural resources.
