POWERHOUSE was brought to La Vernia Junior High School by Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative (GVEC).

Students receive a POWERHOUSE energy investigation booklet to take home. By answering the questions from this booklet, with parents assistance, student have completed an energy audit of their home.

Each student receives a 4-page personalized report based on their answers to the energy investigation booklet. The report shows students what areas of their homes are using the most energy and water. The report also compares their household with Texas average households.

From this report students learned how the environment is impacted by their households' use of energy. The report also has tips and savings on how to reduce their energy and water cost.

Students learn that low-flow showerheads can save up to 50% of their household's water usage. They also learn that compact fluorescent lamps can help save on their home's electric cost.

Student find that shading, such as solar screens, porches, trees and shrubs can keep rooms cooler, therefore reducing their summer cooling cost.

Student play a "jeopardy-type" game as a review for a quiz that is offered to their teacher.

Tammi Murphy of GVEC helps a student understand the information in the report.

Thank you GVEC for sponsoring POWERHOUSE for our school. It was a fun way to learn about using energy and water wisely.

Make your house a POWERHOUSE!!
