The City of San Marcos brought the POWERHOUSE energy investigation program to Hernandez Intermediate School at no cost to the school or students. Steve Sands of the City of San Marcos (SMEU) helped facilitate the program with staff from LCRA.

Students receive an energy investigation booklet to take home. By answering the questions from this booklet, with parents assistance, student completed and energy audit of their home.

Each student receives a personalized four-page report from the information they provided from the energy investigation booklet. Students also take program notes as a study guide for a "jeopardy-type" game used as a review for a quiz offered to their teacher.

The report lists patterns of energy and water use, comparisons with statewide average households and energy and water-saving tips. Students learn about the relationship between the use of energy and the environment as well as ways to use energy and water efficiently.

Students learn that compact fluorescent lighting is the most energy efficient type of lighting for their home.

Compact fluorescent lighting can save electricity, but students also learn that Low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators and low-flow toilets can save 50% of students' home water usage. These devices can help reduce the water cost for their family.

They also learn that shading through the use of solar screens, porches, trees and shrubs can help save on their home's electric cost.

Student play a "jeopardy-type" game as a review for a quiz that is offered to their teacher.

Thank you the City of San Marcos for sponsoring POWERHOUSE for Hernandez Intermediate School. It was a fun way to learn about saving energy and water. Is your house a POWERHOUSE?
