The POWERHOUSE energy investigation program was brought to Brady Middle School by the City of Brady.
Each student received an 8-page energy investigation booklet which they took home to perform a home energy audit with the help of their parents. The booklet asked questions about their homes' energy and water use.
As a result of the home energy investigation, students received a personalized four-page report. From this report students learned how the environment is impacted by their households' use of energy.
Student's reports shows the energy and water use by using a pie chart and bar graph.
Lisa Remini of the City of Brady helps students understand their personalized four-page report, so they can share it with their parents.
The report lists patterns of energy and water use, comparisons with statewide average households and energy and water-saving tips.
Students learn that low-flow showerheads can save up to 50% of their household's water usage. They also learn that compact fluorescent lamps can help save on their home's electric cost.
Low-flow devices such as low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators can also save on their energy cost by reducing the amount of hot water used.
Solar screens, porches, awnings, trees and shrubs can also reduce the cooling cost during the summer.
Students play a "jeopardy-type" game as a review for a quiz that is offered to their teacher.
