WEATHER DISCUSSION

...Hot Summer Pattern Settling in for a Long Visit...

A sunny, dry and hot weather pattern looks to remain in place for the next week to ten days, possibly longer. There isn't much more to say than that.  Since it's Friday and I've had a full day of presentations, I'm not going to go into lengthy detail today about the upcoming weather because frankly, things really haven't changed much from yesterday's discussion.  And did I mention it was Friday?

Today's weather maps indicate broad high pressure in the upper atmosphere continues to cover all of the southern US.  But the center of the high pressure ridge is now located over eastern Texas.  This means the most stable atmosphere and the hottest temperatures have shifted to Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley. Today's forecast solutions indicate the center of the high pressure ridge will remain over eastern Texas this weekend, slowly shifting north-northeast to the Tennessee Valley by the middle of next week.

What does this mean for Central and South Texas?  Well, looks like the hottest temperatures so far this summer are just around the corner.  And weather conditions will remain sunny and dry for several days to come.  In regards to the heat, I expect high temperatures will be in the upper 90s for most locations this weekend.  But by Monday, high temperatures will likely climb to about 100 or 101 degrees across most of the Hill Country and Central Texas regions.  High temperatures towards the coast look to stay in the upper 90s.

Forecast solutions indicate the center of the high pressure ridge will shift back to the southeastern US late next week and next weekend.  This will cause an easterly wind flow in the lower through upper atmosphere from the Gulf of Mexico into Texas.  This should cause high temperatures to drop back to the upper 90s across the Hill Country and Central Texas regions with middle 90s closer to the coast.  A couple of isolated Sea Breeze showers will also be possible across the coastal plains.   The rest of the region looks to stay dry.  Long-range solutions indicate few changes beyond weekend.

But we will need to keep an eye on developments in the tropics in the coming days.  As the center of the upper high shifts to the southeastern US and that easterly wind flow develops, that east wind will have the potential to steer any possible disturbances across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas.  As of late today, the tropical Atlantic remains fairly quiet.  A fast-moving tropical wave across the south central and southeastern Caribbean is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.  The system is moving so quickly it is unlikely there will be any tropical development.  Out in the eastern Atlantic, another strong tropical wave has moved off the coast of Africa.  This wave and the one ahead of it will be moving into a more favorable environment for development in a couple of days and we could see one or both of these waves become better organized.  But nothing looks threatening over the next couple of days.

Finally, since the sky will be clear the next couple of evenings, try to catch an interesting display of planets in the evening sky.  When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look west.  The planets Venus, Saturn, and Mars are converging to form a skinny triangle in the sunset sky. Saturn and Mars are especially close together, only 2 degrees apart for the next few nights.   You can find sky maps for July 30, 31, August 1, 2 at http://www.spaceweather.com

I hope everyone stays cool and has a good weekend.  Thanks for reading.
