This six-hour state-approved course covers safe navigation, required equipment and state laws for all types of boating including personal watercraft. In addition to earning a Texas Parks and Wildlife Boater Education certificate, class participants can receive a 10 percent reduction in boater insurance rates.

Anyone born on or after Sept. 1, 1984 must take a boater education class before they can legally operate a boat or personal watercraft powered by a motor of 10 or more horsepower, or a sailboat that is more than 14 feet in length. Those age 18 or older are exempted from the law.

For details, see the Texas Parks and Wildlife's Digest of Water Safety Act.
