ODEM, Texas – The Odem Little League soon will install two new scoreboards at its community fields, thanks to a $10,720 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.

The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $2,681 in matching funds from the league, will enable the group to replace two scoreboards that have not functioned since they were damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

“This project is about much more than just keeping score,” said Gil Perez, president of the Odem Little League. “It’s about giving our young athletes the same game day experience their peers in other towns enjoy—and restoring a piece of what we lost when Hurricane Harvey damaged the old equipment.”

Despite ongoing maintenance efforts, both scoreboards have been beyond repair since the 2017 storm. The new LED scoreboards will provide clear, visible displays for players, coaches and fans, making games more engaging and helping families follow the action in real time.

“This grant is a huge win,” Perez said. “It allows us to make a meaningful upgrade that would’ve otherwise taken years to accomplish. The addition of these scoreboards will significantly improve the quality of youth sports in Odem and foster a more engaging environment for our young athletes. We’re incredibly thankful to LCRA for helping us take this step forward and for supporting the pride we have in our community.”

Odem Little League serves Odem and surrounding communities.

The community grant is one of 45 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which helps volunteer fire departments, local governments, emergency responders and nonprofit organizations fund eligible capital improvement projects in LCRA’s wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves.

Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted in July 2025. More information is available at lcra.org/cdpp.
