Dry and Quiet Weather Will Continue into the First Week of October

There was a touch of fall in the air early Friday as temperatures cooled into the 50s and 60s. According to LCRA’s Hydromet, Friday’s lows were generally in the mid and upper 50s across the Hill Country and the upper 50s to low 60s across Central Texas. Unfortunately, the fall-like temperatures didn’t quite make it to the coastal plains region, where lows were only in the upper 60s to low 70s. LCRA’s lowest gauged temperature was 49 degrees at a site located about 5 miles southwest of Telegraph, in northern Edwards County. In Austin, the minimum temperature at Camp Mabry was 65 degrees, while Austin-Bergstrom Airport reported a low of 59 degrees.

A dry and tranquil weather pattern has taken shape in the wake of Wednesday’s cold front. Friday’s weather maps showed a broad, stable ridge of high pressure the middle and upper atmosphere stretching from Mexico to the northern Plains states. Forecasts call for the ridge to remain over Texas through late next week, causing an extended period of dry and tranquil weather. A sunny sky is predicted for Friday and Saturday, with some scattered high clouds spreading over the area Sunday through Tuesday.

Little change in the temperature pattern is expected through Tuesday. The afternoons will be warm, but pleasant overnight readings are forecast into next week. Even warmer daytime temperatures can be expected next Wednesday through Friday as the ridge strengthens over Texas.

  • High temperatures Friday through Tuesday are forecast to be in the upper 80s across the Hill Country, and near 90-92 degrees across Central Texas and the coastal plains
  • High temperatures next Wednesday through Friday are forecast to be in the low 90s across the Hill Country, and in the mid-90s at most other locations

  • Low temperatures Saturday through Monday mornings are predicted to be in the upper 50s to low 60s across the Hill Country, in the low and mid-60s across Central Texas, and the mmid-60s across the coastal region
  • Lows Tuesday through Friday mornings are predicted to be in the low 60s across the Hill Country, the mid-60s across Central Texas, and the mid to upper 60s across the coastal plains

Looking into next weekend and the week of October 6th, forecasts call for the ridge of high pressure to remain over Texas through the period, causing continued sunny, dry, and warm weather. High temperatures are forecast to generally stay in the low 90s, with lows in the 60s. Some of the longer-range solutions indicate this dry and warm pattern will likely persist into the week of the 13th. Little to no rain is forecast through the middle of October.

Tropical Weather Outlook

Weather conditions remain quiet across the Gulf and the western Caribbean Sea. No tropical cyclone development is expected across this area over the next seven days.

In the tropical Atlantic, Gabrielle has become post-tropical. It was located late Friday morning just east of the Azores, and was pushing to the east at 31 mph. Top winds were still near 65 mph. The system is forecast to approach the coast of Portugal on Sunday.

Hurricane Humberto was located Friday morning over the central Atlantic, about 450 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands.  Humberto was moving toward the northwest near 5 mph. A west-northwestward to northwestward motion with a gradual increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 90 mph with higher gusts. Significant strengthening is expected over the next couple of days, and Humberto is forecast to become a major hurricane late Friday or on Saturday.

Showers and thunderstorms continue to show signs of organization in association with a tropical wave located near Hispaniola, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and eastern Cuba.  An area of low pressure is expected to form along the wave by Friday night when it moves near the southeast Bahamas.  This low is expected to become a tropical depression when it is in the vicinity of the central and northwest Bahamas over the weekend, then track northwestward or northward over the southwestern Atlantic. Regardless of development, heavy rains and gusty winds ongoing across the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Turks and Caicos Islands are likely to spread across the Bahamas and eastern Cuba during the next day or two.

September Has Been Unusually Dry Across Central Texas

While most of the Hill Country and the middle Texas coast has at least seen some rain this month, much of Central Texas, including Colorado County, has missed out. Doppler radar estimates and gauge data show September totals have been less than a half inch. The Austin and Travis County area appear to be the driest. Camp Mary has recorded a monthly total of just 0.08 inches. Austin-Bergstrom has recorded just 0.18 inches. If no additional rain falls this month, records show this will be the 6th driest September on record at both sites. Much of the Hill Country has seen totals of 1-2 inches, while Matagorda County as recorded totals of 2-4 inches. September rainfall has been below normal at most location, expect across Matagorda County.
