Dry and Unseasonably Warm Weather is Forecast through Late Week

Despite the calendar saying December, this week’s weather is expected to feel more spring-like rather than anything close to winter. An unusually strong ridge of high pressure developing and setting up over Texas and the southern U.S. this week will help push the jet stream north into Canada, allowing for temperatures to become unseasonably warm. Similar to what we see in summer, the ridge will create a stable atmosphere across Texas, limiting the development of any rain. In fact, no significant totals of rain are forecast through the end of the month.

The cold front which pushed through the Hill Country and Central Texas regions on Sunday is lifting back to the north, allowing warm and humid Gulf air to return inland. Widespread morning clouds will give way to a partly cloudy sky Monday afternoon. The higher humidity will cause clouds to quickly return Monday evening and Monday night. Areas of fog look to develop after midnight across the coastal plains region.

  • High temperatures Monday are forecast to generally be in the upper 70s, with lower 80s expected across the coastal region
  • Lows Tuesday morning will include the lower 60s across the Hill Country and mid-60s at most other locations

Similar weather conditions are forecast Tuesday through Saturday as our region remains under the influence of a warm and moist flow off the Gulf. Expect a pattern of widespread nighttime and morning clouds giving way to mostly sunny and unseasonably warm conditions in the afternoon. Areas of fog will be possible each night.

  • High temperatures Tuesday through Christmas Day are forecast to be near 78-80 degrees, with lower 80s expected towards the coast
  • High temperatures Friday and Saturday are predicted to be in the low 80s across the entire region
  • Low temperatures Wednesday through Saturday morning are forecast to be near 60 degrees across the Hill Country, in the low 60s across Central Texas, and in the mid-60s across the coastal plains

Some changes in the weather pattern are forecast to take place next Sunday when the strong ridge of high pressure over Texas weakens, allowing a Pacific cold front to push south across the state. While a few spotty light rain showers may develop along the front, no significant totals of rain are expected. Cooler temperatures will follow behind the cold front Sunday into next Monday.

  • High temperatures Sunday and Monday are forecast to be in the 60s
  • Lows next Monday and Tuesday mornings will include the upper 30s across the Hill Country, the low 40s across Central Texas, and mid to upper 40s across the coastal area

The outlook for next Tuesday through Friday calls for partly cloudy, dry, and a bit milder weather. Expect high temperatures to be around 70-72 degrees, with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s.

No cold air/arctic outbreaks are predicted through the first week of January.

Wishing everyone Safe and Very Happy Holidays!
