Forecasts Call for Significant Rain to Develop Friday through Saturday
OCT. 22, 2025
After several weeks with no rain, recent forecast solutions have been quite consistent in calling for the development of widespread rain and scattered thunderstorms across our region beginning late Friday, continuing through Saturday.
A trough of low pressure currently pushing inland along the coast of California is forecast to move east-southeast across the Desert Southwest over the next couple of days, reaching West Texas Friday night. Out ahead of the trough, considerable moisture is forecast to spread north from the Gulf beginning early Friday. A few scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible by Friday afternoon as the atmosphere becomes increasingly moist and unstable.
But the main focus for rain showers and thunderstorms is forecast to occur Friday night through about midday Saturday when strong atmospheric lift spreads over the region ahead of the upper trough. Forecasts call for a large area of rain showers and scattered thunderstorms to develop across parts of West Texas late Friday afternoon, with the activity then spreading east across the Hill Country, Central Texas, and coastal regions Friday evening through about midday Saturday. The probability for rain will be near 90-100 percent. Several ingredients will be in place that are expected to make this a very efficient rain-producing system. In fact, there will be a potential for pockets of heavy rain occurring in short periods of time. This could possibly lead to some localized street flooding and rises on area creeks and streams. Light showers along with a couple of isolated thunderstorms look to continue Saturday afternoon through Saturday night. Mostly sunny and dry weather is forecast Sunday and all of next week.
Rain totals from this event are forecast to highest for areas along and east of Interstate 35. Here, widespread totals of 1-3 inches are forecast. Some isolated totals of 4-5 inches will be possible. For areas west of Interstate 35, totals of are forecast to average between 1 and 2 inches, with some isolated totals to near 3 inches possible.
NWS Rainfall Forecast Valid through 7 pm Monday:

Saturday’s storm system won’t be bringing any cool air with it. High temperatures Sunday and early next week are forecast to be in the mid and upper 80s, with lows in the 60s. Noticeably cooler air is forecast to arrive next Wednesday and continue late week in the wake of a relatively strong cold front.
