INGRAM, Texas – As the City of Ingram continues to recover from last year’s devastating floods, city leaders are increasing their emergency response capabilities by adding a versatile utility task vehicle to the city’s fleet, thanks to a $16,454 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.

The LCRA Community Grant, along with $5,485 in matching funds from the city, will pay for a UTV that will help first responders get to hard-to-reach areas that may be inaccessible to firetrucks and police cars. The UTV will be available to police officers, cooperating fire department agencies and public works personnel.

“Our community is very small, so when an event like a flood or other weather-related emergencies occur, it’s all hands on deck,” said Claud Jordan, Ingram mayor. “We were among the hardest hit communities during the July 4 flooding last year, so that really highlighted our need for rapid and effective public safety response, and this UTV is going to help a lot.”

In addition to providing a safer mode of transportation across rough terrain, the UTV also can be used during community events to provide a quick response to medical or safety incidents in areas patrol vehicles can’t reach.

The Ingram community is home to a growing urban wildland interface area where residential neighborhoods directly border undeveloped land, wooded areas, trails and river corridors subject to flooding. Adding a UTV to the emergency response fleet will greatly improve the ability to navigate limited access roads, rugged terrain, dense vegetation and muddy conditions that would restrict traditional emergency response vehicles.

“We’ve wanted to purchase a UTV for a few years now, and the flooding last year proved we need to be ready if anything like that happens again,” Jordan said. “We are so grateful to LCRA for this grant, it’s going to help our little town tremendously.”

This is one of 41 grants awarded recently through LCRA Community Grants. These grants are awarded twice a year as part of LCRA’s effort to give back to communities in its wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas.

Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted in July. More information is available at lcra.org/cdpp.
