BURLESON COUNTY, Texas – Elizabeth Lutheran Church soon will upgrade its aging playground equipment to provide a safe, fun place for area children to play, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.

The LCRA Community Grant, along with $23,979 in matching funds from the church, will improve the current conditions of the playground by providing new playground equipment, a basketball area, picnic tables, benches and shade structures.

“We can’t currently host events at the playground as it stands,” said Joni Cook, playground committee member. “What we currently have is very minimal, and it’s so old. The wood is chipping and the seats of the swings are near to giving out. We have grand visions of this playground being a place where people can host birthday parties and other gatherings.”

The church hosts a monthly food pantry for the public and other community events where an area for children to have a safe place to play would be welcome.

“We saw there was a need for kids in our church and in our larger community to have a new playground, and we’ve been fundraising and working hard to make it happen,” Cook said. “This grant is helping our dream come to fruition, and it really warms my heart. We are so grateful to LCRA.”

This is one of 41 grants awarded recently through LCRA Community Grants. These grants are awarded twice a year as part of LCRA’s effort to give back to communities in its wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas.

Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted in July. More information is available at www.lcra.org/grants.
