‘Be LakeWise’ when visiting the Highland Lakes

Swim safely, boat responsibly this summer

May 22, 2023

HIGHLAND LAKES, Texas – The Lower Colorado River Authority is reminding visitors to the Highland Lakes to be safe while having fun on the water this summer.LCRA’s Be LakeWise water safety campaign encourages lake goers to use safe boating and swimming practices such as wearing a life jacket and watching out for hidden hazards. “It really comes down to being aware of your surroundings,” said John Hofmann, LCRA executive vice president of Water. “The lakes may look different with each visit, so keep an eye out for objects like trees and rocks below the water surface. These lakes aren’t like swimming pools. The bottoms of the lakes are uneven and can have sudden drop-offs, and you could quickly find yourself in much deeper water than you anticipated.”The No. 1 safety tip on the lakes is to always wear a life jacket. It’s also important to drink plenty of water and never swim or boat alone.“Keep an eye on your buddies,” Hofmann said. “Watch out for one another in and around the water. It only takes a second for someone to find themselves in trouble.”LCRA also encourages boaters to follow provisions in the Texas Water Safety Act and LCRA Land and Water Use Regulations, and to watch for buoys and markers that help identify dangerous areas and restricted zones. For more information, visit www.lcra.org/belakewise and follow LCRA on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to participate in fun water safety-focused giveaways.
