College Scholarships

Our college scholarship program serves high school seniors in the Central Texas area who are pursuing higher-level education in a variety of craft and technical fields.

The full-ride scholarships are generously structured to cover tuition, books, tools and housing costs. Scholars receive $10,000 per semester and are assured employment with LCRA after graduation.

Eligibility requirements

  • High school senior accepted to attend Texas State Technical College, Tyler Junior College or Blinn College
  • Commit to interning with LCRA during summer breaks while attending college
  • Commit to three years of employment with LCRA post-graduation
  • Pursue an associate degree in an approved area of focus
  • Follow minimum hours per semester for your degree plan
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Submit a complete application by Jan. 31 of your senior year

Areas of focus

Scholarship recipients will study and work in one of the following areas of focus. Specific details and contact information for each area of focus is provided below.

Fleet
An LCRA fleet mechanic inspects, repairs and maintains LCRA’s fleet assets, including diesel trucks, off-road equipment and hydraulic equipment, such as bucket trucks and man lifts. Tools, uniforms and OEM training are provided.

Facilities
An LCRA HVAC technician installs, maintains and repairs commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment at LCRA campuses, plants, substations and dams. Tools, uniforms and OEM training are provided.

An LCRA facilities technician supports the operations, maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities and grounds at LCRA campuses. Tools, uniforms and OEM training are provided.

Power Plant Operations
An LCRA power plant operator:

  • Monitors and operates switchgear, boiler, turbine, generator, scrubber (if coal unit), and auxiliary equipment to produce electric power.
  • Operates and isolates equipment problems associated with a coal-fired, gas or combined-cycle gas power plant, according to established operating procedures.
  • Develops competence by performing structured work assignments and receiving instruction, guidance and direction from supervisor, manager and/or more experienced colleagues.

Power Plant Maintenance
An LCRA Energy Services electrician performs tasks related to routine repairs, maintenance, and/or construction and installation of electrical equipment such as motors, breakers, switches, relays, and other associated components as required by assigned work area.

An LCRA Energy Services mechanic performs tasks related to routine repairs, maintenance, and/or construction and installation of mechanical equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, actuators, valve & piping and other associated power plant components.

Power Plant Instrumentation and Control
An LCRA instrumentation and control technician installs, tests, calibrates, maintains and repairs instrumentation, control equipment, monitoring equipment and related systems at power plants.

Telecom
An LCRA Telecommunications technician:

  • Installs, maintains, and operates LCRA’s telecommunication networks, which consist of digital trunked radio, microwave and fiber technologies. Technologies may consist of DWDM, MPLS, LAN/Wan, VOIP and wireless packet networks. These technologies support LCRA’s transmission, water, wholesale power and enterprise services, including hydromet, generation and substation operations.
  • Possesses a fundamental knowledge of IT and/or telecommunications technologies such as packet routed and switched networks with a desire to obtain Networking Certifications in Cisco, Juniper, Nokia or equivalent. Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Computer Programming/Systems Administration and/or Automation and Controls Technology would be an ideal learning and education career path for a Telecom Technician.
