JUNCTION, Texas – The Junction Youth Baseball & Softball Association soon will construct a walking and biking trail at its popular sports complex, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority.
The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $10,438 in matching funds from the association, will enable the group to add a walking and biking trail as it works to enhance the existing facilities.
“Right now, a lot of people in our community use the roads around town to exercise and spend time with their families outdoors,” said Dale Guthrie, president of Junction Youth Baseball & Softball Association. “This project will ensure there are safe places for community members to exercise and connect with nature where they won’t have to worry about traffic or other road hazards.”
The group also plans to plant native flowers, grasses and trees to highlight the natural beauty of the area. The walking trail will include benches and exercise stations so community members of all ages and abilities can enjoy the trail and participate in a healthy lifestyle.
“This is sort of phase one for what we have in mind for this area,” Guthrie said. “We’ve been running into the obstacle of fundraising for this project for two years now, and LCRA is helping us achieve our goal much quicker. We’re not a wealthy county, but thanks to this grant we’re able to start building something special for our community in the immediate future.”
The community grant is one of 45 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which helps volunteer fire departments, local governments, emergency responders and nonprofit organizations fund eligible capital improvement projects in LCRA’s wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves.
