LOMETA, Texas – The Lometa Independent School District soon will construct a pickleball court that will be available for both school and community use, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Hamilton County Electric Cooperative.
The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with $14,730 in matching funds from the school district, will enable the school to transform a vacant concrete slab into a fenced, double pickleball court that can be used by students and will be available to the public outside of school hours.
“In a town like Lometa, where public spaces for physical activity are limited, this project is an investment in both student health and local well-being,” said Rob Moore, superintendent of Lometa ISD. “The new courts will give students and residents a place to stay active, connect and enjoy one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. Pickleball is a life sport that welcomes all ages and abilities, making it a perfect fit for our community.”
Lometa ISD has served as a hub for community health and exercise for years, and the new court will build on that tradition.
“With the nearest gym more than 20 miles away, Lometa ISD has long opened its facilities to the public to help fill that gap,” Moore said. “As the area continues to grow, so does the need for accessible health and wellness spaces, and we’re proud to help meet that need. This project is a true community effort, with local contractors, school staff and residents all stepping up to contribute time, talent and resources.”
The community grant is one of 45 grants awarded recently through LCRA’s Community Development Partnership Program, which helps volunteer fire departments, local governments, emergency responders and nonprofit organizations fund eligible capital improvement projects in LCRA’s wholesale electric, water and transmission service areas. The program is part of LCRA’s effort to give back to the communities it serves. Hamilton County Electric Cooperative is one of LCRA’s wholesale electric customers and is a partner in the grant program.
