Getting the most out of your benefits
Health care is expensive. Premiums, copays, coinsurance – it all adds up. But there are ways to reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
7 ways to maximize your benefits and get the most out of your health care coverage
1. Shop around.
UnitedHealthcare offers on-demand tools so you can compare facilities, doctors and procedures to find the right quality and value for your health. For major medical procedures, you could save hundreds of dollars. Use the
Health4Me app or use the
cost estimator tool on the UHC website.
2. Use Tier 1 specialists
UHC has a credential for rating specialists on quality and value. When searching for a specialist using UHC’s online provider search, look for the Tier 1 designation. These specialists meet UHC’s stringent criteria, and you will pay a lower copay when you visit a Tier 1 specialist.
3. Save money with Virtual Visits.
UHC’s telemedicine benefit can save you money on doctor visits for routine illnesses. Visit with a doctor from the comfort of your home using video chat. Doctors are available 24/7, and the copay is just $10.

4. Discuss medication options with your doctor.
LCRA’s prescription drug plan categorizes drugs into three pricing tiers, with additional tiers for specialty drugs. UHC provides a
prescription drug list that shows the pricing tiers for the most commonly prescribed medications. Consider bringing the list with you to the doctor’s office so you can have a more informed discussion about a medication and possible alternatives before leaving with the prescription. You can also look up the medication within the
Health4Me app so you know exactly what you will pay before you arrive at the pharmacy.
5. Keep up with preventive care.
LCRA wants you to stay healthy, and our medical, dental and vision plans are structured to cover preventive care. Is it time for a mammogram, eye exam or annual physical? Most preventive services and health screenings are covered at 100 percent.
6. Get a second opinion.
If you participate in LCRA’s group medical plan, you have access to
2nd.MD, a new LCRA benefit that provides a free second medical opinion.
7. Ramp up wellness.
Start some healthy habits, or add some new ones to the mix. LCRA wants to help you feel great. Check out the
Rally online wellness program for daily encouragement and incentives. UHC’s
Real Appeal weight management benefit is free for participants and offers comprehensive support for weight loss that includes coaching, exercise and nutrition.
